How did you get involved in motorcycle racing?

My dad has always been a fan of anything 2 wheels and he used to ride Motocross as a hobby. He bought me a 50cc motorbike when I was 2, and I started to ride it before I was 3 years old! I went on to race Motocross at an International level, then switched over to tarmac road bike racing when I was 16/17, entering into a European Championship (2007) on 600cc machinery and I haven’t stopped since then!

How have you coped during the lockdowns?

During the first lockdown I was actually stuck at my girlfriends parents house in Spain! Unlike the UK, we had terrible weather for around 7 weeks, not that it mattered as we were only allowed out of the house to go food shopping! Not even for exercise… luckily they have a home gym where we trained twice a day! Exercise and food was what kept us going, along with spending some quality time with family.

What has been your greatest achievement in motorcycle racing?

There are a few different highlights that I consider my greatest achievements: Becoming the first Brit to win the European Superstock 600cc Championship, finishing on the podium in the Moto2 Grand Prix race of Malaysia and finishing on the podium in the Bol d’Or 24hr Endurance World Championship in France.

What is your biggest motivation to keep pushing your limits of your performance?

In Motorcycling racing there is no such thing as perfection, and I can be a bit of a perfectionist! So there’s always room for improvement. That and the competition, there’s always other people pushing to be better, so if you want to win, you have to keep on pushing.

What does a typical training week entail for you?

During the off-season is where the majority of the hard fitness training happens and during the season it’s more about maintenance and recovery. The off season training can consist of 2-3 long cycles (70-120km) per week and/ or indoor rowing sessions, 2-3 gym sessions per week of strength and conditioning, with some days being 2 sessions per day, for example a light cardio session on the gym days. Plus I try to ride Motocross once per week. Not many rest days!

What advice do you have for someone who is considering taking up motorcycling seriously?

Do your research before you go and buy your bike and gear, try to have some knowledge about where you want to go racing before you commit to it. It’s all about being prepared for the task ahead. Make sure you have prepared physically, fitness is key at all levels of racing and you’ll enjoy it more if you are physically ready.

What do you enjoy the most about motorcycle racing?

The success has to be the best part, even above the adrenaline and feeling of riding a bike at 200mph. We work so hard to be the best out there, so when the results come, there’s no better feeling that standing on the podium and spraying champagne !

Describe your perfect weekend.

Spraying champagne after a race! It doesn’t matter how I get there, but winning on a Sunday is always the best way to finish it! A glorious sunny day, winning at a race track like Cadwell Park or Donington Park with thousands and thousands of fans there would be amazing.
