Gaelic footballer, Chrissy McKaigue

 

Chrissy McKaigue plays Gaelic Football and Hurling for Robert Emmets GAC Slaughtneil, Ireland. For those who are not familiar with Gaelic Athletic Association, it is an Irish and international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, handball and rounders. Did you know over 25 countries play GAA!

Tell us about yourself

I am a 27-year-old secondary teacher who plays Gaelic Games for my local club Slaughtneil and County Derry. I have represented Ulster and Ireland also.

How did you get involved with Gaelic Football and Hurling?

The GAA is ingrained in my family and community through the generations so it was natural that I would follow that pattern.

Gaelic Football and Hurling – which do you prefer and why?

It is hard to choose but if I had to really choose it is probably football.

Growing up, who was your all time inspirational sports player?

Michael Jordan for me as it was attitude and competitive drive that I have so much respect for.

Can anyone get involved with Gaelic Football or Hurling?

Yes, anyone can get involved in GAA and its becoming a big thing worldwide.

What is your best sporting achievement so far?

Achieving the double Ulster success with my club this year.

And your sporting goals for 2017?

To improve as a person and as an athlete. I find if I focus on that, my goals are much more achievable.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you?

I spent 3 years in Australia as a teenager playing professional AFL.

What are your top three sports nutrition tips?

  1. Quality meat is essential
  2. Tart cherry juice is great for immunity
  3. Sleep is king!
